0% VAT applies to home solar and batteries until 31 March 2027, then 5%. Extra costs only arise for unusual roofs (for example very steep or three-storey scaffolding, or a fuse board that needs replacing); we tell you at the survey, in writing, before you agree anything.
What every installation includes
- Free roof and electrical survey, with a system designed for your roof and usage
- Scaffolding, put up and taken down
- Panels, mounting rails, inverter, isolators and generation meter
- Wiring and connection to your fuse board, tested and certified
- Notification or application to the local network operator (G98 or G99)
- MCS certificate and building control notification
- Handover: how the system works, the monitoring app and what to check
Network operator rules (G98 and G99)
Small systems with an inverter up to 3.68 kW per phase are simply notified to the network operator after installation (G98). Bigger systems, or solar plus a battery above that limit, need approval before installation (G99). We handle both. G99 approval can take a few weeks, so we start it straight after you accept the quote.
Planning permission
Rooftop solar on a house is normally permitted development, so no planning application is needed. Exceptions include listed buildings, flats and some conservation areas, especially on roofs facing the road. We check your address at the survey. If you live in a flat, you usually need the freeholder's permission.
Export payments
Electricity you do not use goes to the grid. With the MCS certificate we provide, you can join a Smart Export Guarantee tariff and be paid for it. Tariffs and rates vary between suppliers, so it is worth comparing.
Paying
We take a deposit when you book and the balance on completion. Everything is agreed in writing first.
Questions
How many solar panels do I need?
Most family houses fit 9–10 panels, about 4 kW. A household using more electricity, or with an electric car, often suits 5 kW. We size it from your bills and roof.
How long does installation take?
Usually one or two days on the roof, plus a day for scaffolding up and down.
Will the price change after the survey?
Only if the survey finds something unusual, such as a difficult roof or an old fuse board. We explain any change in writing before you agree.
Do you install solar on commercial buildings?
Yes, on shops, offices, warehouses, schools and churches. See commercial solar; it is priced by quote after a site survey.
